Solstice Sunrise

Alight with flame, the flag-unfurling dawn
With radiance claims the day and year reborn.
Arise! Awake! Red-gold heralds of the morn
Strike on cold stone to spark the air anon,
Kindling new light that now the night has gone.
Triumphant rings the cracking ice’s horn.
And shadows fade from every rose and thorn
As dark slips out with but a silent yawn.
The frosted air with gladness rings aloud
And warms the western hills with shafts of gold,
Revealing wilds to the edge of sight.
And in the east, the quiet sand-streaked cloud
Hangs breathless at the threshold in the cold.
Welcome, and well come, in morning’s light.
